Position Summary

The Legal Counsel provides legal support to the nonprofit organization, incorporated in New York State. This is an opportunity for a passionate and experienced lawyer to make a real difference in the lives of our volunteers and people utilizing our programs in the United States and worldwide. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of non-profit law, as well as experience with contracts, intellectual property, and employment law. They will also be an excellent communicator and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Position Responsibilities

- Provide legal advice to the organization on a variety of matters, including contracts, intellectual property, and nonprofit / employment law
- Draft and review legal documents, such as contracts, grants, and policies.
- Represent the organization in legal proceedings, if necessary
- Work with the President to ensure that the organization is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
- Stay up-to-date on changes in the law that may affect the organization

Qualifications & Experience

- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- 10+ years of experience practicing law, with a focus on non-profit law
- Strong understanding of contracts, intellectual property, and nonprofit / employment law
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Experience providing legal advice to non-profit organizations
- Experience drafting and reviewing legal documents
- Experience representing clients in legal proceedings

Important Notes

- Consults directly with the President and may advise the Board of Directors
- No set hours as services are on an as needed basis. That said, briefly meeting remotely at least once a quarter is requested to share information and keep informed.

IMPORTANT: It's vital that the nonprofit has access to key documents and notes by storing them in the nonprofit's cloud to ensure reuse and sustainability.
